The week will consist of the usual events, exhibitions and parties at showrooms and other venues across the city. Attending a trade show is a great way to network with like-minded people, learn about the latest techniques, tools, and processes, or take a “low-stress” trip approved by your company. Our team will be using the information to plan their 2024 event schedule. We hope to connect again with folks we met at past conventions and get to know a few new faces over the year.
Expo '74 +50 Represented at GU Senior Design Expo
Team members discovered that travelers with limited vision frequently rely on video calls with friends or family for assistance, while others depend on airport staff to push them to their gates in wheelchairs. Second place went to Paul Brionez, CID+, senior PCB design layout engineer, Wisk Aero. Third place went to Ajeesh Francis, senior PCB engineer, Tessolve Semiconductor Pvt. At the end of the round, each competitor delivered their project file to judges Kris Moyer and Patrick Crawford, IPC; Steve Roy, Roy Design and Manufacturing Service; Russell Steiner, Amphenol; Kevin Kusiak and David Caputa, Lockheed Martin. The judges placed weight on examining completeness of the board (i.e., how many routed nets) vs. critical errors – namely short circuits, clearance violations, via producibility, and various signal integrity aspects. This week, the Michelin Guide unveiled its inaugural Michelin Keys in the United States, which spotlights outstanding hotels across the country.

After a hiatus of two years, the folks behind the Crop are sure excited to be back. Featuring a stellar list of speakers from fields as diverse as visual arts, hustle coaches, illustrators and educators, and muralists and entrepreneurs, the event promises to be a success. Design is, at its root, optimistic problem-solving that provides aesthetic and structure to guide change.

The event, endorsed by the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), positioned Los Angeles as an emerging epicenter of fashion creativity and innovation. Talented people from these two disciplines and covering a wide range of markets and industries join to teach aspiring artists and professionals about the ins and outs of the job. The UX STRAT is a hybrid event of 2022 and can be accessed remotely as well as in-person. Bringing together leaders from the creative world, it promises to deliver an experience of strategic design thinking where you’ll learn new tools and techniques of design and product development. The UXDX Conference brings stakeholders together and showcases companies and case studies where these shifts are taking place and making an impact. If you are looking to see what actionable insights are in this field, and the various ways they can be implemented into teams and designs, this is the conference for you.
FASHIONS EPICENTER
The teams’ projects will take flight during the inaugural California State University 3D-Printed Fixed-Wing Aircraft Competition on Saturday, May 20, from 8 a.m. The expo, which was held at several locations throughout campus, featured dozens of projects, including prototype designs and software applications for robotics, sustainability, transportation, public safety, and more. With the development of 3100 Wilshire tower, L.A.'s traditionally commercial corridor is infused with new residential life and activation. The vision for 3100 Wilshire connects, reflects, and respects the historic structure on site, as well as the neighboring Bullocks Wilshire building which is the historic-cultural monument of the City of Los Angeles. A rich panel of experts will talk about issues as crucial as ethics in design, algorithms and privacy, artificial intelligence, and its impact on automation and communities. It’s a rich collaboration of design thinkers from around the world who are going to share their take on how design shapes economy and society.

Our annual, tent pole event takes form over the course of a four day festival where we experience studio tours, panel discussions, salons, curated exhibits and installations, gallery shows, and a block party. Iceland's largest design festival returns to Reykjavík with an event spanning disciplines including architecture, fashion, interiors and graphic design. The world's biggest annual design gathering encompasses the giant trade fair at the Fiera Milano exhibition centre plus the "fuorisalone" fringe events hosted in hundreds of different venues across the city's design districts. Project Exhibition Graphic images of the most current local lighting projects featuring the collaborative work of local designers and manufacturers will be on display through out the event space.
These designers, many of whom had graced the stages of New York Fashion Week, illuminated LAFW with their groundbreaking collections. The week culminated with the highly anticipated closing runway show by No Sesso, a brand celebrated for its bold designs and challenge to traditional fashion norms. The new and reimagined LA Fashion Week under the ownership of N4XT Experiences is coming back for its 3rd season Fall 2024. LAFW proved to be an innovative blend of fashion, beauty, technology, and sustainability.

This semester’s Senior Design Expo showcased 204 team projects from 12 schools and three different Georgia Tech colleges. Students across disciplines collaborated to innovate, underscoring the importance of bringing diverse minds together, paving the way for innovative solutions that hold promise for shaping a better future. ECE winning team Electric Pump for Rocket Propellants designed an electric pump which can be used to deliver liquid propellants into a rocket engine. “We are overjoyed to bring this type of open streets event to our Irvine community for the first time,” stated Mayor Farrah N. Khan in a news release. Participants are encouraged to come prepared for a day outdoors and to take advantage of the wealth of resources and expertise available onsite.

Additionally, a team of civil engineering seniors was presented with an opportunity by Aztec Engineering Group, Inc. to design a sustainable and feasible residential community project in Corona, CA. Scandinavia's largest design fair will take place from 6 to 9 September this year after being postponed from its regular slot in February due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A summer edition of Stockholm Design Week will take place in the Swedish capital from 5 to 11 September to coincide with the rescheduled fair. Claiming to be Asia's premier design fair, Design Shanghai brings together the work of both established and emerging designers from China and abroad.
LightSPEC West is set to step into the void left by LightShow West, aiming to recapture the attention of Southern California's lighting community. With the dissolution of LightShow West due to bankruptcy amid the pandemic, LightSPEC West is also a biennial event, now strategically scheduled during non-Lightfair years. Organized by the brilliant minds behind the super popular design blog Under Construction, this event will look at the practices and policies of brands and businesses as they navigate brand identity waters. Design companies that arrived in the last two years or made an impact that made them more visible. Product and services manufacturers, commercial design stakeholders, and design educators will convene for this three-day event to inspire, educate, inform, and promote. This conference is an attempt to bring the world’s attention to female power in product development.
Quite a lot has changed with the expo since it launched in Spring 2018. The expo shifted to a virtual format due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and then shifted back to an in-person format in Fall 2021. Award categories for presenting teams have been created and updated, along with processes for judging (and even for recruiting judges).
